ONAM CELEBRATION IN LOYOLA COLLEGE

It is a moment of immense pleasure and satisfaction for me as I have been a part of Onam Celebration 2009 @ Loyola College Chennai. We, around 230 students and 10 teachers gathered yesterday to celebrate this wonderful festival of Kerala with great pomp and vigour. The programme started @ 8.00am with the Inter-departmental Pookkalam Competition in which 10 teams participated. It was followed by a meeting @ Lawrence Sundaram Auditoriun and renowned playback singers and winners of the Kerala State Award in 2007, Vijay Yesudas and Shwetha Mohan came as the chief guests. Putting aside all the formal proceedings of the meeting, both Vijay and Shwetha became two among the audience and initiated a musical extravaganza which all the students and teachers enjoyed with full spirit. Principal Rev.Dr. Albert Muthumalai SJ came to convey his greetings and regards to all.
After the meeting, we witnessed different traditional art forms of Kerala like Thiruvathirakkali. Rope pulling was also conducted in which the 2nd UG team defeated the PG team in boys section and 2nd PG girls lost aginst the 1st PG. Finally, we had delicious Kerala Sadya which reminded us our typical Onam celebrations @ Kerala. After all, the programme proved the tendency of Keralites of unitedly celebrating such festivals wherever they are. It was the first time in the history of Loyola that a Kerala festival is organized in such a manner and the true joy was clear from the response of the teachers. Notable names who worked for the success of the programme include Priyanka, Justin, Jose, Reny, Bipin, Deepu, Varun, Abraham etc. The names of Shijo, Joseph, Sachin, Unni...... are also remembered for their active involvement in taking up different responsibilities assigned to them.

Talk by Dr.Vandana Shiva

Three days back, I was given a golden chance to listen to a talk by Dr. Vandana Shiva the renowned environmentalis. The programme was organised by our college in collaboration with Prakriti Foundation. In her talk, she emphasized on the preservation of our environment and warned the aftermaths awaiting. She could inspire the audience to a profound extent by sharing the experiences she had through her public life. She urged that it is our attitude towards the environment that matters and not our academic degrees referring to a particular order by the Govt.of Tamil Nadu. She also drew a clear picture on the way in which the ASEAN deal is going to affect the farmers and such people. It was a session to rethink our attitudes towards the very concept of development.
